Kevin Brainard
DEPUTY DESIGN DIRECTOR, MARTHA STEWART LIVING
After earning a BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts, Kevin Brainard joined Spot Design/SpotCo, a New York City based, award-winning design and advertising studio that specializes in the entertainment and theatre industries. Six years and 33 co-workers later, he moved to HarperCollins Publishers where he supervised the art direction and design of over 150 book jackets per year. In August of 2002, Brainard opened Pleasure-- a one-man design studio with a diverse group of clients including the advertising, entertainment, publishing, fi lm, and theatre industries.
Brainard's work has been recognized by AIGA Communication Graphics (365) and 50 Books/50 Covers, American Center for Design 100 Show, Art Directors Club, American Illustration, Communication Arts, Emigre, Graphis, Metropolis, the New York Book Show, Print Magazine, and the Type Directors Club. Books featuring his work include Becoming a Graphic Designer: A Guide to Careers in Design, Handwritten: Expressive Lettering in the Digital Age, Letterforms: Bawdy, Bad, and Beautiful, Sight for Sound, and forthcoming publications Graphics Today and Old Type/New Type. In 1999, Entertainment Weekly named Brainard's poster for Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead as one of the "30 Greatest Movie Posters."
He teaches Typography and Graphic Design at the School of Visual Arts and Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City. Brainard lives in Norwalk, Connecticut with his wife, Jodi Crews (not Mrs. Brainard), and their dog, Winston A. Wilde.
